The Smithsonian American Song Company will perform a “Tribute to Broadway” at The Theatre at Washington at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 12.
The third in a series of four “Smithsonian at Little Washington” concerts, the performance will highlight many of the best-known and most memorable songs written for the Broadway stage over the past 50 years.
In memory of the late composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein, the performance will include a medley of Bernstein’s songs, and a preconcert talk will explore Bernstein’s musical genius and his unique contributions to the American musical theatre.
The concert will feature the dynamic team of David Troup and Dorothy Kingston. In addition to their appearances at the Smithsonian Institution, they have performed at the Kenr^dy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra, Wolf Trap, the Grand Opera House in Wilmington, Del., and in clubs and concert halls from New York City to Shanghai.
The performance will be preceded at 7:30 p.m. by a lecture by Dwight Blocker Bowers, a producer and' historian at the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History, who specializes in the field of American musieal theatre and popular song. In addition to his work with the Smithsonian American Song Company, he has been nominated for two Grammy awards.
