RICHMOND — Sen. Kevin G. Miller, a 14-year Richmond veteran and the Senate’s second ranking Republican, may soon call it quits.
Miller, 63, said he will seek reelection in 1995, but will step down after serving in the General Assembly’s 1999 session. The quiet and unassuming certified public accountant and former James Madison University business professor has represented Rappahannock County and most of Fauquier County since 1983.
In an exclusive interview last Monday with the Rappahannock News, the Harrisonburg resident for the first time revealed his desire to retire. “If I run for re-election next year and win, it will be my last,” he said. “I want to spend more time hunting and 'fishing. I want more time to ride my motorcycle. ”
Miller’s decision to retire, based upon re-election, comes at time when the Republican Party appears on the verge (the party is three seats shy) of taking majority control of the Senate. Miller said such a scenario could force him to rethink his retirement. “That may change my perspective a bit,” Miller said in his third-floor office overlooking the historic state capitol.
As the second highest-ranking Republican in the Senate, Miller would have his pick to be chairman among five Senate committees should the GOP push the Democrats into minority status. Miller said he would like to chair either the Senate Transportation or Privileges and Elections committees.
