the com, and because of the floods in the midwest last year, prices are very high. Mr. Turnbull feeds his heifers only enough com and hay daily for them to gain one and a half pounds a day, because in the spring he will artificially inseminate them and turn them out to feed on grass.
Mr. Turnbull and Mr. Welch both keep their cattle separated by weight, so they receive the correct amount of feed. If different sizes were mixed together, some might receive too much protein, and others too little dry matter. It makes it much easier to feed them when they are all together in the same lot.
Farmers Welch and Turnbull could be the only ones using this program in Rappahannock County.
