The Library Board struggled with its budget at last Thursday’s meeting, trying to close a nearly $8,700 difference between expected revenues and planned expenditures.
• Included in increased expenditures were a 31.2 percent increase for salaries of library staff, a 111.8 percent increase for repair and maintenance, and a 46.7 percent increase for telephone service.
The large increase in salaries was to include an additional assistant for 24 hours a week at $7 per hour. Betty Smith has been working for the library under a state grant for developing the computerized public i access catalog. Library director Nicki Lynch hopes to be able to keep the position once grant funds are used up.
The salary category also included increases for two other part time li- i brary employees and a 5.5 percent increase to the library director’s salary to make it more comparable to salaries for directors in surrounding counties.
Twenty-five hundred was included for repairs to the library driveway.
Frank Warner, reporting for the buildings and grounds committee said this was a token amount to cover paving the driveway and parking area. He said he estimated completing the job would cost between $12,000 and $15,000. \
When the board went over the problem of funding the budget, Mr. Warner suggested that $2,000 be dropped from the maintenance category, but he said the need would remain. He said he had analyzed the board’s options, and “the situation with the road for long term maintenance is very serious.”
Library Board member John McCarthy said he had originally opposed paving the driveway, but continued problems, particularly with the section at the beginning had convinced him “I was wrong.”
The increase for telephone service would mean an increase in monthly fees from $24.49 per month to $74.62 per month. It would include a second line and intercom.
Member Mary Jamieson objected to this increase. “This is typical of government,” she said.
Mrs. Lynch said now people at the front desk have to holler to her to get the phone when she is in the staff office.
