In ironing out the wrinkles, we leave the first sentence alone. Then, “She believes she won the award because of St. Johns County’s commitment to educate gifted children, and because of her many years experience in teaching the gifted.”
You be the copy editor on this sentence form The Cincinnati Enquirer in late January: “Looking down both barrels of February, and forgetting for now the vagaries of March, the lack of remaining school "snow days’ and of road treatment supplies supports suspicions that abnormal weather is now the norm, ‘anomalies’ are routine, and ‘extremes’ are the order of the day.”
What a mess! A couple of advantageous periods would have helped.
My point is that it is not necessary to pack every detail into a single catch-all sentence. The sentences of prose composition have this in common with marriage: Twp are often better than one.
