Featured speaker will be Mr. Wallace J. Dyar, nephew of the resort’s founder George Freeman Pollock. Dyar began visiting Skyland as a teenager in the early 1920s. He served as assistant manager and postmaster of Skyland in the 1930s.
George Pollock established Stony Man Camp in 1894. The resort began as a collection of tents and a small dining hall. The camp eventually became known as Skyland as it grew to include dozens of rustic cabins hosting hundreds of guests each year. Pollock’s own cabin, Massanutten Lodge, built in 1911, is still used by the Park Service as an information station.
Pollock and his wife Addie were conservationists who worked to preserve the scenic beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. As president of the Northern Virginia Park Association, Pollock and his friends and supporters zealously promoted the area around Skyland for the new eastern
