Old-timers take it for granted. Newcomers don’t know what to make of it. And medium-timers (people who moved here 20 or 30 years ago) have embraced it with gusto. . -It’s the old rural habit of lifting your hand—or at least your finger— and waving whenever you pass someone on the road. / * “Waving is part of this county’s charisma,” says Nancy Peacock, who moved here from Front Royal this spring. “I love it.”
Her husband, Glen, says that in his home state of Maryland, the only place he saw as much hand waving as he does here was on the Eastern Shore years ago. “They probably don’t do it anymore—it’s gotten too built ud.”
