An exhibition of portraits by Mary Sturcken is on view at The Middle Street Gallery in Washington.
The work is comprised of pastel and pencil drawings, oil paintings and etchings. The pastel drawings are skillfully accomplished using many layers of colors in a quick, yet deliberate style. Sturcken’s layering of color, as seen in “Julia” and “Male Model,” creates an intensity to a lone figure study, which could otherwise be viewed as static.
