Now, manifestly, the street clothes did not have a sore hamstring. Let us break one clumsy sentence into two tidy ones: “Defense, hustle, and maybe even a sense of desperation carried Portland to the victory despite the absence of its captain and leader, Clyde Drexler. PERIOD! Sidelined by a sore hamstring, Drexler watched in street clothes.”
Nothing beats the period. Its regular use is basic to good copy editing, but too often we forget the basics. The Tyler (Texas) Courier-Times carried an article in December about buying a can “Year-end car sales may offer the best deal for buying or leasing a new car—but it is also a time to beware of false advertising, odometer fraud and higher prices for women.”
