In the afternoon session Betty Roberts of the Piedmont United Way addressed the board. She said Rappahannock is included in the five-county organization and several of the agencies that receive funds from the Piedmont United Way serve clients in Rappahannock County. The Child Care and Learning Center was added to the list of agencies receiving funds this year, she noted.
She said she hopes to raise more funds in Rappahannock County this year. The campaign will officially start Sept. 15. The goal this year is $230,000, she said.
The supervisors agreed that at next month’s public hearing on changing road names they will consider only roads where 75 percent of the residents have signed a petition to change the name.
Mr. McCarthy reported on meetings he has had with the sheriff and Richard L. Biby "who offered to help the county find a site for a new communications tower to serve Cellular One and the county dispatch system.,
Mr. McCarthy said Mr. Biby hatLprepared a series of maps showing how much of the county could theoretically be covered with a 100-foot tower in Washington, at Scrabble and at Huntly. Washington, being more central, provided the best coverage, he said. The 100foot height would be the minimum, he said, not necessarily the height that11 is eventually selected.
