Hampton District representative Mike Massie asked if satellite systems might make the new tower obsolete in five years. Mr. McCarthy and the sheriff agreed that they have no indication a satelite system will be available for Rappahannock County. Chairman Hubert Gilkey said a satelite system would also require a large dish probably mounted on a tower.
Mr. McCarthy said Virginia Tech is currently reviewing applications for the position of agricultural extension agent for Rappahannock County. He said there will be a chance to interview candidates later in the month.
They voted to award the recycling contract to Efficient Roll-Off Assemblage (ERA) for $6,720. The county received three bids for handling the recycling at the landfill and behind the Washington Fire Hall. Coiners’, the county’s current contractor, submitted the lowest bid at $5,340, but ERA said the county would receive funds for recycled aluminum that would probably bring their bid under the Coiner’ bid.
