It was an amazing weekend of activities.
Friday night the library launched its Friday evening program series with Gerald Hawkins giving a lecture and slide show on “Mindsteps to the Cosmos.” He traced man’s notions of his relationship to the universe from earliest cave men to the present saying history had brought a series of “mindsteps. ”
From early cave drawings we know that man was aware of the sun, moon and stars he said. The first “mindstep” was creating myths and legends to explain these heavenly bodies.
A major mindstep came with Ptolemy’s depiction of the earth as the center of the universe with other bodies revolving around it. This was a very satisfying notion to man and indicated that man hat} taken the giant step of realizing he did not live on a flat earth beneath a flat sky, Dr. Hawkins said.
