1. The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service announced today that it is extending until March of next year the period for replacement of green cards issued to permanent resident aliens before 1979.
INS will publish a regulations in the Federal Register extending the validity of those green cards issued before 1979 until March 20, 1995. According to INS, the six-month extension is necessary because of a surge of applicants over the past two months to meet the fast-approaching original and now discarded deadline of Sept. 20. 1
INS Commissioner Doris Meissner said the six-month extension to March 20 of next year is designed to give some additional time to the thousands of lawful permanent resident aliens who have not yet applied for their new cards. Commissioner Meissner cautioned, “Those still in need of replacing their green cards should take advantage of the additional six-month grace period as soon as possible in order to avoid any future possible confusion
