Anniversaries are times of fulfillment and celebration. Out come the cakes and balloons that remind us another milestone has been reached. September 17 marks an anniversary of which few Americans know the significance. On this day in 1787 one of the greatest documents in the world was given life. This world renowned ^document is our Constitution, and next week it celebrates 207 years of being the law of the land.
It took seventeen weeks in the summer of 1787 to devise the instrument that is the guardian of our liberties. Fifty-five delegates met in Philadelphia’s State House to frame a replacement for the Articles of Confederation which had joined a new nation in a loose “league of friendship.” Our founding fathers realized their young nation was doomed unless serious revisions were made to the Articles. Their solution was drafting a Constitution with a strong central government.
