The first is one called “hare and a feather.” The first target skips along the ground; the second sails through the air. This is hardly like any real hunting situation. The shooters take turns, joshing and encouraging each other. There are four shots possible here, and few hit more than two of them.
Next is two birds, followed at the next stand by “followers,” a pair of rabbits. At each station Mr. Eastham calls out “trapper ready” followed by the shooter answering “pull.” Station six is called a “nesting pair” or “stacked pair,” two birds, one smaller than the other' appearing almost at once.
“The pain you feel when you miss a shot is like hitting a bad shot in golf,” Mr. Fairbrother explains, “especially when you miss two.”
At station 7 Mrs. Fletcher holds the shotgun high. “Start the gun low and come high,” Mr. Fletcher suggests.
She gets both. “Good tip,” she says, pleased.
Mr. Fairbrother’s gun jams, ammunition with not enough powder, the other shooters suggest, and he borrows theirs. The same thing happens at station 8. “I guess I’d better get more powder,” he says.
“Either that or clean your gun,” Mr. Fletcher kids and loans him more shells.
Sleet begins to fall. Cattle grazing nearby seem unperturbed; neither the weather nor the shooting causes noticeable concern.
