Shannon's Trip
Once again we can marvel at the generosity of Rappahannock’s people. The response to an article in last week’s Rappahannock News about Shannon Shrader, a county six-year old who is battling brain cancer, and her mother’s desire to see that she gets a trip to Disney World has set in motion processes that may very well accomplish the Kelly family’s goal.
The Bear family, home from Chicago for the Thanksgiving holiday, read about Shannon and decided they will try to use their contacts with United Airlines, Mr. Bear’s employer, to provide transportation for the family. We don’t know yet whether United will help.
Jane Mullan arranged to have Project Rainbow, a county tax-exempt organization that helps people with cancer, be the collecting agency for donations to the Kelly family.
Charles and Fran Eldred, members of the Washington Business Council, have pledged 10 percent of their receipts from customers in their lighting shop this Colonial Christmas weekend to the fund for Shannon Shrader funneled through Project Rainbow. The Eldreds are challenging other county businesses to join them by also pledging a percentage of their receipts.
The county Fire and Rescue Association and several of the individual squads have responded with donations. Others are expected to follow suit.
4-H leader Hazel Zinn-Day has risen to the challenge of coordinating all of this. She reports that by last Wednesday evening several offers of help were coming in, and what seemed an impossible dream a week ago now seems almost within reach.
