With traffic projected to increase to 10,000 trips per day, the study suggests it may be necessary to widen U.S. 211 between Washington and Sperryville from four to six lanes.
U.S. 211 is identified in the study as a major arterial. U.S. 522 from Massie’s Corner through Chester Gap and from Sperryville to Culpeper is labeled a minor arterial.
The most northern section of this road is expected to show the greatest increase. Just south of Huntly, traffic was measured at 3,900 vehicles per day in 1992 with a projection that this will increase to 7,030 by 2010. South of Flint Hill traffic was measured at 3,100 in 1992 and this is projected to increase to 3,930 in 2010. The study suggests improving the section north of Flint Hill as a two-lane road may not meet future traffic needs.
The section of U.S. 522 just south of Sperryville was measured at 3,010 in 1992 and at 4,000 at another point north of Woodville. Another section of the road south of Scrabble and just north of Round Hill was not measured in 1992, but showed 2,720 vehicle trips a day in 1986-87. All three sections are projected to increase to 5,640 in 2010.
