The RCHS junior varsity basketball team has opened their season with a winning streak.
They beat Luray 63-38 on Dec. 6 and Central 52-50 last Friday.
Of the game against Luray, Coach Luther Stanley said, “They practiced hard all week and it showed in the final score. Everyone got a chance to play, and I was pleased with each and every one of the kids.”
In the game against Central, Coach Stanley said his team started out flat in the first quarter but came out ready to play ball in the second quarter. ,
The team trailed for most of the game, but came out on top at the buzzer in a very exciting finish. Top scorers were Chris McLear with 16, Eric Smith with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and 12 points for Jeff Atkins.
The RCHS varsity basketball team has not been as successful in their first two games. They fell to Luray 69-56 on Dec. 6 and to Central 81-62 last Friday.
Coach Eugene Baltimore said, “We need to win a game. We need to start getting our confidence up.”
Of the Luray game, he said, “We didn’t play well. We came out flat and missed too many easy shots. In the second half we outscored them.” He said that Ryan Armistead did a very good job on defense.
In the Central game, Coach Baltimore said that his team played great in the first quarter. “It was mental errors that hurt us. We did not execute on some of our plays and that is what killed us,” he said.
Andre Fletcher led the scoring with 25 points. Derek Daczewitz played an excellent game and had eight points.
“It takes time with a new coach and a new system. In time we will be a very good basketball team,” said Coach Baltimore.
