Extension Agent, Home Economics •• Mincemeat is a traditional holiday food used to make mince pies and other desserts. It is made from beef, cooked and chopped fine, and put through a food grinder. The ground cooked beef is combined with suet, currants, raisins, apples, lemon and orange peel, brown sugar, spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves and then soaked with run or brandy. It is usually made 3-4 weeks before Christmas and should be stored in a clean stone crock or glass jar in a cold, dry place.
Many older and historical cookbooks give the directions for making mincemeat. Today prepared mincemeat can be purchased at grocery' stores and used in many recipes for holiday desserts and breads.
Here are a few recipes using mincemeat to flavor them. These all use the commercially prepared mincemeat since it’s easier and more convenient.
