The consolidation of offices will take place over a period of three years and will require the acquisition of new or additional office space in some locations. Mr. Davis said that he did not anticipate any immediate office relocations since detailed planning will be required.
The reorganization of USD A is projected to save the Federal Government $3.6 billion over a five-year period. Services to farmers in all new locations will be more efficient since employees in the resulting larger offices can now specialize in the specific assigned areas. Where CFSA Program Assistants were responsible for all programs in small offices, they may now be assigned only one or two programs.
Although travel distances for some producers may be further to the Farm Service Centers, Mr. Davis feels that farmers will be pleased to receive one stop servicing from all three agencies.
