The report the supervisors have received on transportation on county roads and the discussion of alternative solutions that will follow promise to be interesting.
Basically every intersection on U.S. 211, U.S. 522 and Route 231 was labeled a “key at-grade intersection.” Does that mean they all are considered safety hazards?
Traffic projections for 10,000 vehicle trips on U.S. 211 between Washington and Sperryville leads to a question of creating a six-lane section. Interestingly this traffic volume is estimated to be greater than traffic closer to Warrenton. This is perhaps based on the fact that the section from Massies Corner to Sperry ville is also carrying through U.S. 522 traffic.
The notation that two lanes on U.S. 522 north of Flint Hill “may not be sufficient” leads to the suspicion someone believes this road should be widened to four lanes. Another issue noted by the report on the same section of road points to “increasing through truck traffic on a two-lane corridor.” What do the producers of the report believe will happen if the road is four-laned? ,
Life in the heart of Flint Hill would no doubt be improved by a by-pass, but current residential development on the outskirts would require such a by-pass to sweep through quite a lot of farmland.
The proposed Sperryville by-pass has obviously not been dropped from VDOT plans. The supervisors need to make noises now if they want that organization to come up with a plan that does not cut off through traffic on Route 1002.
The report also notes that the recently adopted general commercial district area plan applies only to a section near Washington, neglecting to include the rest of the roadway between Washington and Sperryville, but the supervisors are particularly trying to avoid having the entire length of fourlane there become a strip commercial zone
Probably the most intriguing projection included in the report is the one which states that traffic on Route 231, which increased from 1,480 vehicle trips per day in 1986-76 to 2,500 in 1992, will drop to 1,870 in 2010.
Projections of 2,120 trips per day on Route 640 near Viewtown are truly alarming.
Concerned citizens should plan to be there when alternatives are discussed at a joint public meeting of the Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission sometime after the start of the new year.
