County unemployment increased sharply in October reaching 4.9 percent, up from 2.5 percent in September.
According to statistics recently released by the Virginia Employment Commission there were 4,518 people in the county employed in October compared to 4,643 in September and 234 unemployed compared to 120 in September.
The VEC reported it is not able to determine how much of this increase in unemployment is due to the closing of the Aileen plant in Flint Hill since they do not keep statistics according to the former employer. They reported that October i is normally one of the higher employment months in Rappahannock County because of the apple harvest and the number of people employer! in the tourist business.
In October 1993 the unemployment rate was 2.2 percent.
