Piedmont District representative Tom Junk said the meeting included a number of “good comments.” He added that the concept of “clustering housing around the villages disturbs me a little bit,” and said the planners should take up Gary Settle’s comment that the county needs “some place for kids to go” and address that in the Comprehensive Plan. He added there seemed to be sufficient support to decrease the housing density in agricultural zones from one dwelling per 25 acres to one per 50 acres.
Jackson District representative David Fannon said 50acre density would be “impractical.”
Mr. Massie asked Mr. McCarthy how the county could go about requiring developers to prove sufficient water.
Mr. McCarthy said several years ago when Del. Andy Guest represented Rappahannock and part of Fauquier in the legislature the county was included along with Fauquier in legislation passed by the General Assembly giving the county the right to do that. He said nothing had been done about that but he would investigate.
He said it could be important particularly for businesses locating around the villages that have no significant surface water such as Flint Hill and Woodville.
Susan Babcock suggested the planners follow-up on the “visioning” meeting by having an outside facilitator come in and conduct a further meeting. “It was a very good beginning,” she said. “The visioning process can take quite a while. You may have arguments ... by the time you are through with it all, you really have something that is representative of the county, and it strengthens the Comprehensive Plan. I’d love to see us continue the process.”
Mr. Zindej asked Mr. McCarthy if he could serve as the facilitator.
