The Planning Commission seems to be on tratk with current plans for getting public input into revising the Comprehensive Plan.
Starting in September the planners will take up one issue a month as they prepare the section of the plan on goals and objectives. Some of those issues will be controversial, and the planners can expect to get plenty of public comment.
When the process is completed and a draft of the entire Comprehensive Plan is finished, it would also be a good idea to take it on the road and hold hearings in the county's fire halls to pick up comments from residents who rarely come to the Courthouse for public meetings. If those meetings could also be social gatherings with perhaps potluck suppers or fundraising dinners for the fire departments, even more people might come out.
The Comprehensive Plan is an important document. It is intended to guide zoning and subdivision ordinances and how applications are handled. In legal disputes over land use issues, comprehensive plans, which chart a county’s intended future, are given great weight by the courts.
Finally, when the document is ready for publication, it would be a good idea if the goals and objectives section became the first chapter instead of the last, hidden behind pages of charts and descriptions of what is and was. This data, w'hich is an important part of determining what can be, should be supplementary to the county’s statement of what future it plans.
