This weekend the Rappahannock County Monarchs won a game that they didn’t play and lost a game that they did play.
On Saturday, the Monarchs were supposed to host New Market in the first game of the opening round of the Apple Vallfey League playoffs, but only seven New Market players showed up at the Rappahannock County High School field. The Monarchs won by forfeit to take a 1-0 lead in the best of three series.
On Sunday the two teams played in New Market, with New Market getting the best of the Monarchs 8-3. New Market pitcher, Chris Eye, limited the Monarchs to five hits and struck out eight in nine innings.
Rappahannock scored in the first inning when Festus Clanagan led off the game with a walk. Vincent Aylor's double to the right field wall scored Clanagan, but Aylor was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. Eye settled down and retired the next eleven Monarchs.
