New Market took the lead with two runs in the first inning, padded it with four in the fourth, and added two insurance runs in the fifth to make the score 8-1.
Rappahannock did not threaten again until the eighth inning when Luther Alexander led off the inning with a triple. Unfortunately for the Monarchs, Alexander Was thrown out trying to score on Thomas Jones’s ground ball to third. With two out, Jones stole second and third, but the Monarchs could not plate him.
The Monarchs got their final runs in the ninth. Andy Furr singled and went to third on William Parker’s single. Bob Howard singled Furr in. Parker scored when David Clanagan singled with two out.
The Monarchs will host New Market in the series’ rubber game on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Rappahannock County High School. New Market coach Jeff Poole has assured the Monarchs that New' Market will indeed field a team for this game. The winner will move on to the Apple Valley League finals.
