“There is some disagreement as to whether the advice we received was accurate,” he said.
Nancy Fitzgerald, the Democratic committee’s vice-chairman, said the group filed the complaint because they consider it “a pretty big betrayal of trust” to accept money for one purpose and spend it on another.
“It’s a campaign issue because Mr. Katzen is not being honest with his contributors,” said Ms. Fitzgerald. “If I am a contributor, my money’s going to make sure that person wins this year. If you’re using my money to pay for an old debt that has nothing to do with this campaign ... it’s going to bother me. I “Voters who ha.ve supported him in the past should be aware that this is how he's operating this summer ... people might want to look again at the person they're supporting,” she said.
Katzen dismissed the complaint as “an effort to distract voters from the issues at hand,” but pledged not to personally attack his Democratic challenger. Sue Scheer.
“Their campaign will learn that there are no shortcuts to winning a campaign,” he sa,ld. “Mudslinging, at least in the 31st District, is an element our voters don’t like.”
Scheer declined to comment on the complaint until the Board of Elections or the commonwealth’s attorney completed their reviews.
