Reading about the governor’s big adventure, 1 found myself wishing I could be part of the entourage because the one thing I have missed about being part of the political media is traveling across Virginia with various candidates or candidate boosters.
Lots of folks have taken to the RV route, including Doug Wilder, Ollie North, Chuck Robb, Don Beyer and so on.
But I doubt if any before or since have done it any better than the colorful Henry Howell who ran for lieutenant governor and, won and then ran twice unsuccessfully for governor.
Covering Howell for reporters was a joy since he always gave them plenty to write about and was at all times totally accessible to the media.
