Me was shrewd enough to know that in rural areas country stores were often like community centers where people gathered both to buy things and to exchange gossip. Of course, the weekly papers always put in a photo and story and the visit to their community of the candidate for governor.
I’m sure that those now along for the ride with Gov. Allen are having lots and lots of fun, for there is something about flitting from stop to stop as the countryside whizzes by that is exhilarating.
Somehow you feel transported from the real world and all its problems into another dimension where the most important things in life are the constant handshaking, the impromptu campaign speeches, the roadside welcoming committees, the sound bites sandwiched between breakfast in Grundy, lunch in Wytheville and the traditional chicken dinner in Martinsville.
