journalism as a member of the Washington, D.C. staff of CBS World News in 1944. From the 1950s through the 1980s, he worked for WMAL radio and was a newscaster for WMAL-TV. Channel 7, in the 1960s and 1970s.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mildred B. McCaffrey; a son. Michael McCaffrey of Culpeper; daughter Sally Ann Burner of Hampstead, N.H., and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be private. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Phyllis Verner
Phyllis Jane Verner. 81, of Washington, died Dec. 1 1 at the Fauquier Hospital in W'arrenton.
Miss Verner and her sister, Mary V. Updike and her late stepmotherAlice W. Verner operated the original Washington:Flint Hill Telephone Exchange. She also was a practical nurse and worked for many years at the former White Hall Nursing Home in Falls Church.
Miss Verner was active in retirement at her church. Trinity Episcopal Church, Washington where she helped with the nursery, and the Senior Nurtrition Program.
She was a member of the Rappahannock Historical Society.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father, stepmother and brother. Clarence.
She is survived by two sisters Mary Verner Updike of Washington, and Elizabeth Jenkins of Suffolk and a brother in-law, George Jenkins; onenephew, two nieces and six great' nieces and nephew.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16 atTrinity Episcopal Church in Washington by Rev. Jennings! Hobson. Interment will be in the Washington Masonic Cemetery .
Memorial contributions may be! made to the Washington Volunteer; Rescue Squad or to Trinity Episcopal' Church.
