that the state police have conducted similar checkpoints for several years as part of Operation Alert, and they have proved beneficial in identifying drunk and drugged drivers, motorists in possession of narcotics and weapons, suspended drivers and wanted persons.
“The state police have not and will not target individuals or particular groups, but we will aggressively encourage motorists suspected of violations of the law. Some people may call that harassment, but we consider that we are making the highways safer for the rest of the motoring public,” Newlin said.
“We will continue to encourage our troopers to aggressively enforce the law, including Operation Alert.”
