passed all three parts on the first try, compared to 64 percent statewide. The county dropout rate for 9th through 12th grade was 3.5 percent, compared to 5 percent statewide. Among Rappahannock graduates 36.5 percent eameJ the advanced studies diploma, compared to 38 percent statewide.
At Tuesday night's School Board meeting Superintendent David Gangel said of reports on the study in the newspapers, “I think it’s dreadful. 1 think it’s irresponsible.... I’m really concerned. I think the school system has been portrayed in a very poor light.’’
He said some school systems rank better on attendance because they have policies that say if a student misses five or six days in a semester, he fails for that semester.
“That’s a real motivator [to attend school], but it is hard to administer,” he said. “If a child fails early on, he will be hard to motivate. A strict attendance policy could lead to an increase in the drop out rate.”
School Board chairman Beverly Massie said, “We can’t be responsible for those who run articles, but we are responsible to the children and their parents.”
