VDOT went immediately to work repairing roads and by the weekend no one was stranded. Outside contractors were brought and tons of enormous rocks were added to rebuild roads. The Forestry Department also brought in bulldozers and other heavy equipment to help in the effort. Many hayfields, recently planted com crops and John Burns's vegetable plantings were ruined.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency set up an office at Madison County High School to receive applications for assistance. The local Red Cross and the Piedmont United Way helped out, and Gov. George Allen asked state and private groups to work together under the umbrella organization
