Experience the natural beauty of the Piedmont region through a series of hikes organized by Hunt Harris through the Ragged Mountain Resource Center in Washington.
The first three hikes scheduled offer a variety of views, park history and levels of adventure. On Monday, Jan. 1, the hike will be to Mary’s Rock from noon to approximately 4 p.m. Mary’s Rock is in the northern section of the Shenandoah National Park due west of Sperryville and offers an outstanding view of the Piedmont to the east and the Shenandoah Valley to the west form its 3,514-foot elevation.
The White Oak Canyon Hike will be on Saturday, Jan. 6 from 10 a.m. to approximately 3 p.m. White Oak Canyon is in the central section of the park west of Madison, and has several large water falls and many mighty oak and hemlock groves.
The final hike of the three will be a sunset/full moon, hike of Old Rag Mountain on Saturday, Jan. 6 from 4 p.m. to approximately 10 p.m. The added factor of moonlight makes this a particularly special adventure. Seeing the Piedmont by night offers interesting insight into our development patterns in Fauquier, Culpeper, Madison, Orange, Rappahannock and Green counties, all of which are visible from 3,895 feet.
