In Rappahannock County Circuit Court last week, Judge W. Shore Robertson told Herman Cefus Newman, 37, of Culpeper, that he would be allowed to continue on probation.
Mr. Newman was in court because he has not paid court costs which are now overdue, which is a violation of probation. He said he felt he could come up with $600 by midJanuary, and the judge gave him 90 days to pay.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke argued that Mr. Newman had previously been found in violation of probation in 1988, when his probation was extended five years. “He has been given a couple of times to take care of this financial matter but has not,” said Mr. Luke.
Judge Robertson told Mr. Newman .that his case had been in Rappahannock court almost as long as he had been the judge here. (Mr. Newman was convicted in 1982 of breaking and entering and grand larceny.) Judge Robertson also told Mr. Newman that he was giving him a break that he probably did not deserve, but that he wants him to turn his life around. “You may have set a record as far as how long you have been on probation,” he told Mr. Newman.
