These proposals and an alternative alignment for a Sperryville bypass are expected to be the focus of attention at the Planning Commission’s Jan. 10 public forum.!
Baseball Champions j
The good new in local sports w$s supplied by the Rappahannock Monarchs, a men’s baseball team that competes in the Apple Valley League. The Monarchs managed to win both the regular season and the post season championships during the summer of 1995. :
Coached by David “Scratch” Clanagan, the team is expected fo continue to be competitive in 1996. ;
At the high school the softball and soccer teams had good seasons in the spring of 1995. This fall the cross country team was successful with three runners advancing to state competition.
New Faces, New Places
As usual the year saw some changes in the people occupying various positions in the county.
Judge Burke Hertz retired after several years as the juvenile court judge for Rappahannock and Fauquier counties. Dudley Payne has replaced him on the bench.
David Shaffer replaced Patty Holmes as the library director at the Rappahannock County Public Library in November.
The new year will apparently bring a new chief magistrate to the 20th judicial circuit, as Fran Eldred has stepped down to operate Mrs. Coxe’s Tavern.
Tom Zumwalt moved to Texas, leaving his position as treasurer for the Town of Washington. Louise van Dort, his opponent in the last town election, was chosen to replace him. *
At the school system there are many familiar faces in unfamiliar places. Mary Ann Biggs returned to the local school system from Clark County to become assistant superintendent in February.
Effective with the start of the current school year, there were many more changes in store. High school principal John Toth became principal of George Washington CarverPiedmont Technical Education Center. Assistant principal Jack Raines became the high school principal and Mike Tupper moved from a special education classroom to become assistant principal and athletic director. * ■<*
High school math teacher Helen Williams moved to the central office to become director of pupil personnel. Elementary school principal David Smith moved to the central office to become director of administrative services.
At the elementary school assistant principal Raye Tupper became principal, and Richard Smith moved from the central office to become assistant principal.
