committee assignments. The Democrats will.need Republican help, however, to pass a budget and appoint judges. In the 26th State Senate District, which includes Rappahannock County, Sen. Kevin Miller (R-Harrisonburg) won reelection without opposition.
Fire Levy
The Rappahannock Fire and Rescue Association asked the Board of Supervisors to pick up operating expenses of the member fire and rescue squads this year by adopting a special fire levy.
For several years the county has been paying for insurance and some capital expenses for the companies using the general budget. None of the members of the Board of Supervisors opposed the increased cost of covering operating expenses.
State law required that the fire levy be assessed on fair market value, rather than land use value, for real estate. Although the regular real estate and personal property taxes remained at last year’s rates, the fire levy added another three cents to real estate taxes and 20 cents to personal property taxes.
