Hands Across Virginia.
Work is scheduled to start in January to build a new house for Mrs. Fletcher and her family. Local work will include putting in a road to serve her new property, a septic system, well and foundation for the house. The house itself will be manufactured in Boones Mill, Va., and trucked to the county in two sections.
Election
199S also featured a state and local election that resulted in the county’s first elected School Board and a new sheriff for the county. Gary Settle successfully challenged John Henry Woodward for sheriff and carried all the precincts in the county. Other constitutional officers, Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke, Treasurer Frances Foster and Commissioner of Revenue Beverly Atkins were reelected without opposition.
The three incumbent Scho.ol Board members who sought to retain their seats were successful, Paul Nichols defeating Ellen Manson, John Tole defeating Tom Von Fange, and Bryant Lee defeating Libby Whetzel.
