At a meeting last month the group agreed that council member Charlie Tompkins would serve as the group’s chairman. They looked over papers prepared by Mayor Stewart Willisincluding the request for proposals sent out by the school system, and , discusssed what additional informa* tion they will need. • *

Members want to be sure the pro4 posals they get include various alter* native systems such as constructed wetlands as Well as package sewage treatment plants. *

The committee also discussed funding to cover engineering studies and financing and building a system. *

“It’s important we have language showing we’re interested in any kind of approach that makes sense,” Mri Tompkins said. “I find the traditional sewer treatment plant frightening.” '

They also agreed to survey propi erty owners in town to find out what sewer treatment they already have; They will try to get soil maps and a; U.S. geologic map of the town to show to engineering firms.

Louise van Dort said, “The biggest authority on soil types wehave is Newbill Miller. He has knowledge that could save a lot of people a lot of money.”

Ed Barton said, “He thinks if we put in a sewer system in the develops ers will be right behind.” ' *

Ms. van Dort said she was only interested in a system that would serve the properties already in town. Traditional systems need a lot of customers to pay for themselves, she said, “but with alternative systems there is no economy of scale.”

Steve Critzer said the town also needs to explore a “better storm water system.” He said a lot of the septic problems are the result of storm water pooling in certain areas. He said th^ town could explore getting help oq that from the Soil Conservation
