Jim estimates that he has spent 1,500 hours on his project over the last three years, mostly working on his home computer.
Even without his genius, Jim would be a success with his warm personality, athletic ability and can-do attitude, according to teachers, students and family members.
He is a Boy Scout who designed and, with the help of fellow members of Troop 36, built the wooden bleachers beside the high school track for his Eagle project. He has been the goalie on the varsity soccer team since 10th grade. Jim says he spends more time outdoors, hiking, building stuff, doing sports, and the like than he does in front of his computer screen.
Soccer Important Too
Last week, on the last afternoon before he headed to Washington D.C. for the final round in the Westinghouse competition, Jim was
not reviewing his notes, freshening up his exhibit, or doing a last-minute check of his computer program. He was outside in the mud with 20 other Rappahannock players, practicing his soccer moves. He was one of the best players on the field, having been selected as the top goalie for last year’s all-district team and second goalie for the all-region team.
