Leslie Byrne, candidate for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, was the guest speaker at a meeting of the Rappahannock County Democratic Committee on Friday, March 8 in the Courthouse.
Ms. Byrne, a former 11th, District Congresswoman who also served four terms in Virginia’s House of Delegates, will be vying with Mark Warner, former chairman of the Virginia Democratic Party. • The winner to be selected in the Democratic state invention will face the winner of the Republican primary contest between Sen. John Warner and Jim Miller.
Economic fairness is a major issue in this election, according to Ms. Byrne. She said corporations should not be allowed to steal pension funds belonging to their workers. In our global economy, workers need the best training possible and this training should begin early in life, starting with Headstart and including a strong college student loan program. Both of these programs are currently being cut by Republicans, said Ms. Byme.
She also questioned Senator John Warner’s attempts to roll back environmental protection, singling out the Safe Drinking Act. universal health care is high on Ms. Byme’s agenda.
