Rule Unfair

Recently, at the behest of George Allen, the Virginia Housing Development Board voted to deny housing loans to unmarried and gay couples. Far from meriting public approval, that act is worthy of contempt because it institutionalized hatred to satisfy the moralistic, theocratic element of Allen’s political base.
Since the 1995 elections, when Allen failed to make good on his boastful promise to kick teeth down Democratic throats and lost in his bid to take the Assembly for the Republicans, he has swallowed his bile and moderated his rhetoric. But he has not controlled the bully-boy instincts that put him in league with gay-bashing skin-heads and pseudoreligious bigots.
Allen’s overall weak performance as Governor, best illustrated by his failure to deliver viable budgets, might be laid at the feet of inexperience or indifference. But the high-profile decision of the Housing Board exposes a serious lack of respect for the Constitution of the United States. That decision makes the Housing Board a moral arbiter, inserting the State into the private lives of its citizens. In effect it makes gays and unmarried people second
