Imagine the excitement of a child on his (or i her) way to play baseball with the team. Imagine the dismay and anxiety you would most likely experience if you got to the ball field only to find everything (your team’s equipment) burned to ashes.
On Sunday afternoon that’s just what the teams arriving for fall season practice ait Stuart Field experienced, along with their parents and others in the community who comprise the Rappahannock Athletic Association. RAA mem-. bers had spent countless hours to build the facility and raised money to purchase all the equipment.
All gone in a matter of about 20 minutes and not by accident.
The Rappahannock Sheriff’s Office said the fire at Stuart Field was arson.
It destroyed all the buildings, the concession stand, the equipment storage area and the storage area for all the concession items.
RAA president John Ferdetta said they lost their pitching machines, equipment such as bats, gloves, bases, plates, not to mention refrigerators and kitchen equipment along with all the supplies.
Also lost were items like ladders, tools and other building supplies. He said the Virginia State Police investigator told him two separate fires were set and the buildings had been ransacked before the fires were started. Some items were apparently taken because they cannot be accounted for.
