he has farmed in Huntly, but this year the damage to his field corn was terrible. Near the woods the devestation was almost total. As they moved closer to the road, the bears stayed in the middle of the com patch where they were hidden from view.
“I saw four bears within 15 minutes Wednesday evening and they were not a bit scared,” he said.
The area is perfect for bears with woods next to the com field to provide shade and a stream. Well-worn bear trails criss-cross the area along the edge of the woods which is marked by trees with broken limbs and evident claw marks.
“Last year we tried unsuccessfully to catch some,” Mr. Welch said. “In past years if I shot one or two that would deter them, but there are so many now I don’t know what the answer is.”
He estimates his loss on the sweet com at $3,000 to $4,000. The field com is covered by crop insurance if at least 65 percent of the crop is lost. Whether he will be able to collect anything is yet to be determined.
