Dale Welch has a serious problem — bears in the com.
While this may sound amusing the reality is anything but.
Mr. Welch owns a 55-acre com patch in Huntly. “Usually the bears will eat some of the sweet com, so I plant some for them, but this year they have outdone themselves,” he said.
The bears ate not only his sweet com but ruined much of his field com as well. This has never happened before, he said.
Mr. Welch planted 24 rows of sweet com and hid it behind several rows of field com. The bears, he said, found it just as it . ripened and stripped it.
The com patch was dotted with numerous areas where the 'bears sat down and tore the stalks down in circles from 10 to 15 feet in diameter. Some of ' the com was half-eaten and left in the destruction.
After they are through eating, bears play and loll around tearing the stalks down even more, Welch said. “They damage so much I’d feed them in a trough if they would let me,” he added. ? The bears have gotten into his sweet com for the 12 years
