bears are issued on a five-day basis to farmers, but Mr. Bankston tries to discourage it.
A large culvert with a trap door that closes when the bear pulls the bait are used, but once caught the bear will rarely enter one again. A snare made of 3/8-inch aircraft cable is tried when the culvert trap fails.
Once caught the bear is tranquilized, tagged, taken to a remote area and released. Bears are territorial, so they tend to stay in one area. A study several years ago estimated there was one bear in every square mile of the park.
Mr. Bankston said this underestimates the number of bears. He said he has no idea how many there are, but he joked that there is one for every cornfield.
Not one case exists of someone being seriously injured from an unprovoked attack, said Mr. Bankston. Although bears are generally afraid, they are wild and opportunists when food is around. It is important to remove the food source by cleaning barbecue grills and burying garbage instead of throwing it onto a compost pile. He said everyone should be aware that bears are around.
