The shows:
Mini shows are different from most horse shows. Obstacle driving gets pretty creative with bridges, opening and closing a mailbox, backing up in a “z” pattern and putting one wheel in a hula hoop and making a full circle without touching the hoop. Jumping is done on a short lead with the jumps going up to 48 inches.
Mrs. Hoffman said shows give her a chance to meet the cither breeders and to sell horses. Her first year driving at the National Show ring was in 1996, still she ranked 12 out of 72 entries.
Their 61-foot truck and trailer will carry 16 minis at once, each with its own stall.
TTie AMHA has an “official standard of perfection” that is a refined, but well muscled horse with a short back and trim barrel. The leg movement requires a free-swinging stride.
The National Show for the American Miniature Horse Registry was held last week in Columbia, Mo. Hilltop Stud Farm took home two national championships in the A Divsion, one for conformation by Impressive and the other for senior mare by Rosie. Rosie is owned by Peggy and Melvin Poe of Hume. She also won Reserve National Champion.
The 1997 National Show for AMHA will be held at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington from Oct. 2 to 9.
