Later they added another 60 foot by 120 foot indoor arena to the bam for driving. At another end of the bam is a comfortably furnished room with one wall covered with ribbons and trophies. A wellequipped and spacious office is across the entrance hall.
Mr. Dady, trainer and farm manager, is in charge of 96 horses — 10 stallions, 60 mares, 15 fillies, seven colts, several geldings and one mule (adopted by Mrs. Hoffinan out of sympathy.)
He keeps track of each horse’s location on the farm by using a color coded tag for each one and hooking it on a board with columns, each column representing a different bam or pasture. There is a small bam for mares and 100 acres of pasture where breeding stallions and their individual herds of mares reside during the summer.
The herds are counted daily and the board is important in keeping track of each horse.
Mr. Dady employs three young women who help with the training, feeding and care of the horses. Although the horses are small they are treated firmly and are expected to behave. Often advertised as gentle and affectionate, “Each horse is different,” he said.
It takes between 30 and 60 days to train a horse to pull a cart.
