General firearms season for deer hunting opens Monday, Nov. 17. High-powered rifles, bows and muzzle-loading weapons may be used to take deer until the season closes on Jan. 3, 1998. Crossbows may be used only by disabled hunters hunting on private property.
Black bear hunting firearms season opens Nov. 24 and also closes Jan. 3. Last year, 14 eastern black bears were killed in Rappahannock. A total of 612 were taken in the state.
Hunters may hunt from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. No hunting is permitted on Sundays or in any national park in Virginia.
Doe season
Throughout the season, special days are set aside for hunting antlerless deer, bbth does and “button bucks,” first year male fawns. This year’s “doe season,” or “doe days” as they are commonly called, are the first and second Saturdays and the last 12 days of the general firearms hunting season.
