I am a life long resident of
Rappahannock County. I have owned land and operated Jenkins Orchards on Route 621, Yancey Road, Woodville, with my son James for many years. From the sale of fruit and garden produce, I have made a good contribution in taxes to the county and state and have a good relationship with the community.
For many years Route 621 has been a dangerous dirt secondary road. At first maintained by the farm owners themselves, the road later began to be maintained by the state. Since 1982, improvement of the road has been included in the county’s Six Year Secondary Road Plan, and in 1995 hard-topping of the road started.
While some wanted the road improved others were opposed. During this period the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors and The Virginia Department of Transportation made every effort to please both sides.
The west end of the project has just been finished this month. The environment was not harmed and the road is now much safer except for a few trees on curves.
At the east end of Route 621 near U.S. 522, there has been opposition about changing the rural nature of the road in spite of the many dangerous sections. Safety seems to be of very little concern.
At the September meeting all five members of the Board of Supervisors gave the goahead to VDOT to start the improvements on East 621 with bids for the project to be
